Growth in an endeavor is a positive improvement or change that reveals new understanding or experience. In Language Arts, I experienced this type of growth. First, I was assigned the side of prosecution for a mock court case concerning arson. Next, I wrote a closing argument essay which went through many drafts. This closing argument included an introduction, two evidence paragraphs, a counter argument and a conclusion. I also received feedback from my peers and teacher as I went through the revision process. After I finalized my closing argument, I started to prepare for my presentation of the case on the prosecution side. The presentation requirements were to have good volume, use tone to be convincing, not to look down too much at cards (good eye contact), to be in between three to five minutes and to have limited notes. The presentations were somewhat formal and represented a real court room. Each person went up individually and sat at either the prosecution or defense table until it was their turn to present. In the end, I received feedback regarding my presentation so that I could improve for our next presentation. I have grown a lot in my volume and clarity when I present since I have come to STEM and I still have a long way to go. I have improved this year in this specific presentation. Even at the beginning of this year I had struggled with my volume in class discusions and minor presentations. Throughout this experience, my goal was to work on slowing down when I talk and also to speak loud. In this project, I feel like I improved a lot in these areas because I received positive feedback from a student that sat in the back of the room. I still need to improve more and more, but this step was a positive change for me. One thing that helped me in this process was my index cards that helped me remember where to go next in my presentation. These were in bulleted points to help me to refrain from reading straight from the card. My notecards helped me to build confidence in my presentation. This confidence caused me to speak clearly and loudly how I felt about the case. If I didn't have this, I feel that I would have been more quiet because I was unsure of what to say next. The final scoring rubric shows the end result of this. The growth that occurred in my speaking skills was evident and I believe that I will grow more through more eperiences. This presentation really helped me to get out of my comfort zone and convey my ideas on the case clearly to the audience.
