Scaling Game Characters

Math Portfolio Reflection Scaling Game Characters In this project we made game characters to show the rule of scale factor. Scale factor is a multiplied number from the original figure, either scaling the figure down or scaling up a figure. The number that you multiply by the original length is the scale factor. We used the scale factor to make these game characters. These game characters were one original character, a smaller figure, and a larger figure.

We first were required to draft our first game character (original) on a coordinate graph and showing the coordinates in a table. This also required us to accurately label the coordinate points. We then had to make an expression showing how to find the coordinates of the smaller figure and the larger figure. We left that part blank for the person to calculate though. The expression was multiplied by the same number on the x and y axis. This is one of the components of making a similar figure. A similar figure has the same general shape, same angle measurements (on ALL sides), and has the same scale factor (on ALL sides). These parts are the key to getting a game character that were mathematically similar to the original design.

We made our drafts on separate pieces of paper also. These drafts were required to be of high quality with craftsmanship. The amount of craftsmanship was determined by the detail and care put into our game characters. We also had to use craftsmanship in our final characters that we made out of construction paper. These were the same thing that was on our coordinate graph but it was on paper and could be moved around easily.

I learned more about how to use persistence in this project through the challenge of having good craftsmanship in this process of making the final product. This growth will help me to better persevere in later projects and in my career when I grow up. In this time persistence was to keep trying again even when it was really hard to get each piece correctly cut; you had to try cutting the piece with different strategies until you got it the way you wanted. Persistence was getting past struggle of making a little tiny gnome game character even when it was hard to get the right shape the first time.

This process was very challenging because you had to learn how to transfer the drawing on your coordinate draft into a cut out paper that is congruent. Congruence is when to figures have the same shape and size. This coordinate graph had pencil drawings with labels and coordinate points that were very hard to finish also due to the amount of points that there was to graph. These final drafts have pink, blue, and orange colors that were in different places and hard to get to make the certain shapes. To get to the point of this final product was reached by first tracing the shape straight from the coordinate graph onto tracing paper. Next, you will tape that drawing to the construction paper and cut out the shape of the traced figure. This took a lot of persistence because it was hard to get small pieces cut and to have to glue not smear on small pieces.

I can imply this experience in my future because I overcame something that I'm not really good at and not very comfortable with. In the future, I know that I will face obstacles that I'm not familiar with fixing. Persistence in this experience will help me to better overcome the obstacles that I will face like this. The difference is that the obstacle will be harder but, I will have more persistence by then to get through the obstacle through growth in experiences like this.

This process also took inquiry to be grown in because I didn't know how to ask myself these deep thought out questions that saved me time before. Through this process I learned how to use inquiry to benefit my life. Inquiry in this time was to ask myself questions of efficiency about how I placed the pieces that I cut. I had to learn where each piece will be put and how the glue would hold them. I did this by asking myself questions like: Will this piece go down first and represent the base paper? How will I have to cut this piece to get the result that I am looking for? Where Will this piece go and is it aligned l with corresponding parts. This growth in inquiry affected me in this project to get the accurate result that I was searching for. If you refer back to the final draft there are layers that were glued to make each shape. These layers had to be very thought out through the questions stated above.

This experience will help me in the future to get the accurate results that I will search for through thought our questions that push me forward. When it could come down to the fate of a company you will need inquiry to make sure that a big decision does hurt your career. In the end Inquiry can make or break you depending on how you would use it.

Above is my final game characters from this project. There is a smaller game character, original game character and enlarged game character.

This is the drawn out draft of my original game character. This draft shows the coordinates of the figure and the coordinate plane that it is on.
